The Cleaning Power of Vinegar & DIY Cleaner Recipes

Vinegar has been a staple in my cleaning collection for as long as I can remember. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I bought a commercial cleaner! Most people don’t realize the powerful cleaning effects it has and often overlook its use outside of the kitchen.

While vinegar might not be the most powerful disinfectant, it has been shown to protect against some food borne illnesses, such as E. coli, salmonella, and listeria. I use it to clean in my kitchen most of the time, but do choose a stronger disinfectant or add essential oils.

Aside from its disinfectant properties, vinegar makes an excellent all around cleaner. It can remove hard water buildup, rust, mold, sticky spots, and stains. I also use vinegar in almost all my loads of laundry. Vinegar removes odors, acts as a fabric softener, prevents soap buildup on clothes, and keeps your colors bright.

Below are my favorite household cleaner recipes that I use all the time. Because I use essential oils in the recipe and we strive to be a plastic-free home, I prepare my cleaning solutions in glass spray bottles and shake to combine the ingredients.

All-Purpose Cleaner

2 cups vinegar
2 cups water
20-30 drops essential oil (optional)*

Tub & Shower or Degreaser

2 cups vinegar
1/2 cup dish soap
20-30 drops lemon essential oil (optional)

Disinfectant Spray

1 cup isopropyl or rubbing alcohol
1/2 cup vinegar
20-30 drops essential oil (optional)*

*I love using essential oils in my cleaners. They make the cleaners smell fresh and provide additional cleaning and disinfecting properties. Some essential oils that make great cleaning agents include lemon, tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint.
